L'origine réelle de cette fête est attestée au XIVe siècle dans la Grande Bretagne encore catholique où le jour de la Saint-Valentin du 14 février était fêté comme une fête des amoureux car l'on pensait que les oiseaux choisissaient ce jour pour s'apparier.
